With over 30 years of experience in bankruptcy law, Matt has developed a depth of knowledge that few can match. He has represented both debtors and creditors under Chapters 7, 11 and 13 of the Bankruptcy Code, as well as numerous creditor committees in Chapter 11 cases. His experience includes providing representation for the Chapter 7 trustee in the highly publicized Denny Hecker bankruptcy case. In addition to his extensive background in bankruptcy law, Matt acts as general counsel for a number of clients, providing them with guidance on a wide variety of legal issues. What Matt enjoys most about his legal practice is the highly practical application of the law it requires, which emphasizes problem-solving over litigation.

In 2019, Matt made the decision to join Morrison Sund PLLC after 20 years in practice with the Minneapolis law firm of Leonard, O’Brien, Spencer, Gale & Sayre, LTD, where he was a shareholder. A Minnetonka native, Matt welcomed the opportunity to work closer to home and practice law in the community where he lives.

After earning his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, Matt graduated with honors from the William Mitchell College of Law. He is admitted to the bar in Minnesota and Iowa, in addition to federal courts, including the United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

When he’s not working, Matt enjoys spending time at the cabin with his family, including his wife, two adult daughters and his first grandchild. A little-known fact about Matt is that he was responsible for Minnesota’s state tree, the red pine, being planted at the U.S. capitol. An avid outdoorsman, Matt enjoys hunting and fishing and loves to take family and friends out on the water in his fishing boat.
